VAN22%We pull the NHL's full season schedule for every team and split it into played vs. remaining games. Each completed game updates an Elo rating for both teams, with a home-ice bonus and a small margin-of-victory multiplier. The simulator then plays out the remaining schedule thousands of times — each game samples a result from the two teams' Elo ratings, accounting for home ice and the league's typical OT/SO rate.
After each simulated season, we rank teams using the NHL's standard playoff rules: top three in each division plus two wild cards per conference, with points and regulation wins as the primary tiebreakers. The displayed probabilities are the share of simulated seasons in which each team made the playoffs, won their division, or finished first in the league. See the current standings for live positioning.
This snapshot covers regular-season seeding outcomes. Cup probability is added automatically once the NHL publishes a playoff bracket for the season. Check our model performance page for accuracy and calibration data.
Common Questions
We run a Monte Carlo simulation over the remaining regular-season schedule. Team strength is estimated by Elo ratings built from completed games this season, with a home-ice advantage and standard hockey OT/SO points distribution. The simulator sweeps thousands of seasons and counts how often each team makes the playoffs. The same Elo model powers our daily game predictions.
Each simulated season produces a final standings table. Projected points is the average points total across all simulations. Teams with no games remaining show their actual final point total. See how NHL standings work for more on the points system.
Once enough of the schedule is complete, a team's playoff position can become mathematically certain. When the regular season is over, every team's odds collapse to 0% or 100%.
